TOPick: EMSD Launches Special Page to Liaise with Tech Enterprises for the Development of New Technology to Fight against the Epidemic. Local Tech Company Develops Robot to Replace Manual Body Temperature Detection

Roborn's 5G epidemic prevention smart robot is being used at EMSD, and similar robots will be arranged to test at other government venues. It is hoped that these robots can be used at various government venues to reduce the work pressure of front line staff.

With the severity of the novel coronavirus epidemic, the Secretary of the Development Bureau Wong Wai Lun posted on his blog that at present the most important task is to strengthen preventing and fighting against the epidemic. The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) launched an anti-epidemic thematic page on their platform to reach out to innovation and technology companies for the development of new technology projects on fighting the epidemic.

Wong continued that to prevent the epidemic from spreading, locating the potentially infected within the community is an effective method. As for the mobile body temperature detection robot, it was a project developed by a local technology company in Cyberport, which was liaised by EMSD though the online platform. Since the robot is compatible with Wi-Fi and 4G networks, it can carry out missions in different environments, which greatly reduces the manual workload of measuring body temperatures.

When the Government resumed normal operation on 2 March, EMSD tested the robot at the main entrance of the EMSD Headquarters. After four consecutive days of testing, the results in monitoring body temperatures were satisfactory. EMSD has arranged to test robots of the same type at various government departments, such as the Correctional Services Department, Transport Department and Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It is hoped that these robots can be used at various government venues to reduce the work pressure of front line staff.
