TOPick: Startup Develops Outdoor Disinfection Robot Approved for Public Institution Trials

Amid COVID-19, the government’s "Public Sector Trial Scheme" supported anti-epidemic technology. Roborn developed an outdoor disinfection robot, tested by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department and Harbour Office in areas like Western District, Wan Chai, and Tsuen Wan waterfronts.

Cyberport-based startup Roborn Technology specializes in robotics development. In response to the pandemic, the company has created the 5G outdoor disinfection robot “Sau Wu.” Controlled via a system connected to a 5G network, the robot operates on various terrains, including concrete paths, tactile paving for the visually impaired, wooden floors, and slopes. Equipped with artificial intelligence, it can identify objects requiring disinfection and spray disinfectant at different angles and heights. It also supports scheduled operations based on mapped routes. Beyond disinfection, the robot is capable of watering plants.

Professor Simon Poon, Co-founder and CEO of Roborn, noted that deploying staff to disinfect outdoor areas every hour is unrealistic. Outdoor spaces are vast, and manual disinfection may not be thorough, potentially missing critical spots. This inspired the development of the robot.
